First Man – film review

Artsy in the places I didn’t want it, workmanlike everywhere else. Primarily though, this biopic is hamstrung by its lead performance. I like Ryan Gosling, the quality of his film choices has been almost unparalleled in recent years. His subject here, Neil Armstrong, was a stoic, inexpressive figure. That places burdens on an actor to convey much by doing little, ostensibly one-note yet carrying the screen with a great many more. Unfortunately, Gosling’s take is so one-note as to stump an already workaday script at the first hurdle. I still like him though.
